Email Marketing Best Practice|The Get Email Marketing Experience

Email Copywriting 2.0

“I sit down to write my email copy and I just find myself spinning my wheels… finding 40 different ways to say the same thing, struggling to mix up how I present my offer, and taking WAY too long.”

The digital marketing manager for an upscale Sonoma business ran his fingers through his hair and looked at me sheepishly.

“I try to play some of my favorite music to get in the zone, but that distracts me even more.”

He ran his hands through his hair again, catching himself before he could put his head in his hands in defeat.

I could tell, this guy loved his job, and he cared about doing it well. He understood his tech stack. He was creating compelling social media content, and even managing the website copy on a regular basis. But when it came to writing effective email copy that would get a subscriber to click and convert, he was striking out.

Or, as he put it when he approached me, “My email copywriting game could use some work.”

The Get Email Marketing Experience – Email Copywriting 2.0

Not everybody is born a naturally effective writer. Even if you love writing and it comes naturally to you, that skill doesn’t necessarily translate to copywriting for email marketing, where you have limited time, attention, and real estate to inspire action.

If you’ve ever found yourself sitting down to write and hitting a wall, or pushing send and wondering why those thoughtfully crafted words didn’t get your subscribers to click “BUY NOW”, then the “Email Copywriting 2.0” session of the Get Email Marketing Experience would have been perfect for you. So sorry you missed it!

In Email Copywriting 2.0, on February 8, 2023 we covered some simple methods to blast through writer’s block, writing prompts to help you knock out more effective copy in less time, and attendees had an opportunity to be coached on their email copy by Yours Truly.

Although you missed this training session, that does not mean your dream of writing email copy that converts (and isn’t a total bore to write) is hopeless.

Here are a few things from the session that you can apply to your copywriting today:

KEY TAKEAWAYS:

Answer the three dubyas before you write any email copy.

  • Who is this for?
  • Where are they at in their journey with my business?
  • What do they need?

This will help make your email copy speak directly to the person reading your email and make them feel understood (and therefore WAY more likely to convert).

Nail the copy core with WHAM!

The most important email copy (aka the copy core) is your subject line, preview text, call(s) to action (CTA’s) and the headline. Use this acronym, “WHAM” to help you ROCK the copy core every time.

  • Write 30 subject lines (Yes, I know it sounds like a waste of time, but it actually SAVES you time. Try it and see!)
  • Hint at what’s inside your email with the preview text
  • Ask for action in your CTA’s (always be clear and specific; but don’t be afraid to get playful!)
  • Make it obvious WIIFM (“What’s in it for me?”, where “me” is your customer) in your headline

Don’t miss another session of the Get Email Marketing Experience! There is a lot more good stuff coming other than copywriting. So sign up for the next session, or for an entire year for your best value!
